Is Hair Loss a Side Effect Of Coronavirus

Opinions are suggested as coronavirus causes very serious hair loss. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this. In a normal healthy individual, an average of 100 hairs per day is considered normal.

Temporary hair loss called Telogen Effluvium can occur after psychological stressful events, severe surgery, severe physical trauma, and high fever diseases. In these people, the hair grows again within 6-9 months and the person returns to normal. Since corona virus infection creates both psychological and physical stress in the person, there may be different levels of shedding a few months after the infection is over. This shedding stops at a certain point and the hair starts to grow again and the person regains healthy hair after a certain period of time.

Factors resulting from stress, infection, some medications, trauma, febrile diseases, and diets with intense weight loss, postpartum, thyroid diseases and nutritional deficiencies such as iron, zinc and biotin deficiency can cause hair loss. In addition, those who have had Covid-19 infection may have hair loss after the disease. However, hair loss is not counted among the symptoms of coronavirus.

Months of efforts to avoid illness during the pandemic process have negatively affected hair health as well as human psychology. Hair loss can be seen approximately 2-4 months after the infection due to the intense stress, fever and possible side effects of the drugs during the Covid-19 infection process. Staying at home for a long time due to the pandemic, spending about 1 year with stress, anxiety, and sadness caused a serious increase in hair loss. Since vitamin D deficiency is among the causes of hair loss, staying indoors for months also increased the deficiency. Although the common problem related to coronavirus is widespread shedding, there is an increase in problems such as alopecia areata known as ringworm, male pattern shedding (androgenetic alopecia), and gray color change in hair. Hair loss after coronavirus treatment is usually temporary and it is expected to return to normal after an average of 3 to 4 months. If the general condition of the person is good, if he/she is able to cope with stress, if his/her nutrition is balanced and sufficient, new, normal healthy hair will usually start to grow afterwards.
